04 How the planner works
Start. As in the pass planner: places and postcodes are looked up in a table on your device, a location is rounded to the postcode. Nothing is sent.
Times. Approach and way home come from the postcode × pass-end table, the ride over each pass from the same table, transfers between legs from a pass-end × pass-end table (up to 150 km straight line). Missing values are straight-line estimates (marked *). All are route-planner driving times (car profile), without breaks.
Elevation profile. Altitudes from the pass data; approach and transfers are straight lines marked “connection approximate”.
Kit. The same kit logic as on the pass pages, for the coldest and wettest point of the whole tour at the estimated arrival time.
Along the way. Viewpoints, places to eat, fuel and places to stay from our checked list and from OpenStreetMap, along the passes and routes of the tour. «Probably open» comes from the season and opening hours at the estimated arrival time; without data it says «Opening hours unknown». Suggestions: a food stop after about 2 to 2½ hours of riding or between 11:30 and 13:30, a fuel reminder before long stretches without known fuel (over 120 km) and before passes like the Nufenen or Umbrail. A stop moves every later time.
Postcodes: GeoNames (CC BY 4.0) · Sample calculation: the times in this version are rough straight-line estimates (× 1.35, 45 km/h over the pass, 70 km/h to get there), not a route calculation. · Weather: demo data · Borders: Natural Earth (public domain)
